Seamless in the Hills

Ballylaw Road, Strabane

Perched on a site with sweeping views over the hills of Donegal, we were commissioned to replace an existing two-storey farmhouse, built in the 1920s, with a new single-storey contemporary dwelling. From the outset, our design approach focused on creating a home that would harmonise with its surroundings rather than dominate them—a house that feels both present and almost invisible within the landscape.

To achieve this, the exterior is fully clad in black zinc, a material chosen not only for its durability but also for its unique reflective qualities. The dark, mirrored surface allows the house to absorb and reflect the changing sky, vegetation, and terrain, giving it a chameleon-like quality that shifts with the light and seasons. In doing so, the building subtly disappears into the rolling hills, appearing to grow organically from the landscape itself.

Inside, the home is designed around the principles of light, openness, and connection to nature. Expansive glass windows and strategically positioned openings allow daylight to flood the interior, creating bright, airy spaces throughout. These windows also frame uninterrupted panoramic views of Donegal’s iconic hills, allowing the occupants to feel immersed in the landscape while remaining protected from the often-harsh elements.

The single-storey layout encourages fluid movement between spaces, creating a sense of intimacy while maximising the connection to the outdoors. Living, dining, and sleeping areas are oriented to capture the most striking vistas, ensuring that every part of the home benefits from both natural light and the surrounding scenery.

In essence, this contemporary farmhouse is a study in contrast and harmony—combining modern minimalism with the timeless beauty of Donegal. The reflective zinc cladding, generous glazing, and careful siting all work together to create a home that is at once bold and unobtrusive, offering a quiet dialogue with the land while providing comfort, shelter, and breathtaking views to those who inhabit it.
