Modern Family Living
When a local farm owner approached us to design a modern family home within their existing farmyard, we were immediately drawn to the challenge of creating a contemporary residence that both respected and enhanced its rural setting.
Nestled within an active farmyard, yet oriented to embrace the sweeping landscapes beyond, this modern family home was conceived to harmonize contemporary living with the rhythms of rural life. The site, already home to a highly successful farm shop, offers unparalleled views over the Faughan River and the nearby golf course, creating a dramatic and ever-changing backdrop for daily life.
Approaching the house, the warm tones of natural sandstone immediately convey a sense of subtle elegance. Floating-style lintels above all openings and matching sandstone sills lend refinement, while the material palette ties the home seamlessly to its rural context. The two-storey form is deliberately articulated to mediate between the activity of the farmyard and the calm of private family spaces, offering both presence and discretion.
Inside, expansive corner windows at the rear frame panoramic vistas, flooding the interiors with natural light and providing a constant visual connection to the landscape. These windows open onto a secluded family patio, tucked away from the farm shop, yard, and the main Clooney A2 road—a quiet sanctuary where the family can relax and entertain. The positioning of the home, its openings, and outdoor spaces was carefully considered to capture sunlight, maximize views, and ensure privacy without isolating the dwelling from its surroundings.
Every detail—from the alignment of rooms to the choice of materials—reflects a thoughtful dialogue between modern architecture and rural heritage. The result is a home that celebrates openness and light, balances active farm life with family privacy, and provides a contemporary, comfortable setting deeply rooted in its landscape. This project is a testament to designing with context in mind: a residence that feels at once modern, welcoming, and inseparably connected to the rhythms, textures, and vistas of its extraordinary setting.
